UV Radiation - Did you know?

UV Radiation - Did you know?

Because of the position of the sun in respect to the eyes at certain times of the day, harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure to the eyes peaks in the early morning and late afternoon for most of the year - not in the middle of the day as previously thought

UV rays are not only a major cause of skin cancer, but they can also harm the eyes in a number of ways.
Short-term symptoms of too much UV radiation in the eyes include moderate discomfort, increased blinking, swelling, difficulties seeing in bright light, and sunburn of the cornea or snow blindness.
Long-term exposure to UV radiation can cause more significant eye problems such as cataracts, or cloudiness of the lens, conjunctival cancer, skin cancer of the eyelids and around the eyes, and ocular melanoma. UV 400 denotes an eye protection item that has been tailored to prevent both UVA and UVB rays from reaching the eyes.

Sunglasses give comfort in very bright conditions by reducing the total amount of light reaching the eye and, in particular, protect the eye from the damaging ultra-violet (UV) part of the spectrum.

So what does this mean for your children? With out the natural ability at a young age to avoid these UV rays, the parent - thats you! has to enforce the wearing of sunglasses to reduce the effects of UV rays on their young eyes.

Stay Shady!
